Avocado Chocolate Mousse
This avocado chocolate mousse is a deliciously rich dessert that proves healthy eating doesn’t have to mean giving up indulgence. Avocado mousse has its roots in more recent food trends that celebrate the versatility of avocado beyond savoury dishes. This recipe swaps traditional cream with nutrient-packed avocados, creating a silky, smooth dessert that’s naturally UPF-free and refined sugar-free. It’s perfect for anyone looking for a decadent, healthier treat with a rich chocolate flavour. Everywhere on the internet, this dessert is described as a mousse however I would describe it closer to a pudding texture.
Health Benefits of Avocado Chocolate Mousse
Avocados are full of healthy fats, fibre, and essential vitamins like vitamin E, making them a great choice for a nutritious dessert base. Dark chocolate, especially those with 70% or higher cocoa content, is rich in antioxidants and has been linked to numerous heart-health benefits. By using a natural sweetener like honey, maple syrup, or another UPF-free alternative, this recipe keeps refined sugars to a minimum, giving you a healthier chocolate mousse without compromising on taste. Whilst this recipe is super healthy, its not the lowest calorie dessert. If you would like to check out a lower calorie chocolate mousse, or one with a more traditional mousse texture, check out this recipe below.

Method:
Step 1: Prepare your ingredients.
Start by measuring out your ingredients to keep everything within easy reach. You’ll need two ripe avocados, totalling around 300g. Pit them carefully, and scoop out the flesh, discarding the skin and stone. Make sure your avocados are soft, as this ensures the mousse will blend into a creamy consistency. If the avocados are underripe, the mousse may end up lumpy and less smooth. If you are using a small easy to submerge blender cup then you can add the avocado now, but if you are using a larger jug style blender, you may be best off waiting for the next step.

Step 2: Melt the dark chocolate.
Take 100g of dark chocolate and either break or chop it into small pieces for quicker melting. You can melt the chocolate in a double boiler, which involves placing a heatproof bowl over a pot of simmering water, making sure the bottom of the bowl doesn’t touch the water. Stir occasionally until smooth. If you prefer the microwave, melt the chocolate in short 15-20 second bursts, stirring in between to prevent it from seizing. To prevent the chocolate from setting too quickly, I suggest warming your blender cup or container by standing it in hot water for a few minutes before use. You dont have to take this step but you will find yourself chiselling it off the sides of the blender cup to fully incorporate it into the mixture.

Step 3: Blend the ingredients.
Add the avocado flesh, melted dark chocolate, 100ml of milk, 1 tablespoon of cacao powder, and 3 tablespoons of your chosen sweetener (such as honey or maple syrup) to the blender. Blend on high until the mixture becomes completely smooth, which should take 2-3 minutes depending on your blender. You may need to pause and scrape down the sides to ensure everything is well incorporated. The warm blender helps keep the chocolate from setting when mixed with the colder ingredients, allowing you to blend slowly for a perfectly smooth texture.

Step 4: Portion and chill.
Once the mousse is smooth and velvety, divide it evenly between four ramekins or small serving dishes. Transfer them to the fridge and allow the mousse to chill for 2-4 hours. This chilling process not only allows the flavours to meld but also helps the mousse firm up into a perfect dessert texture. It is worth noting that even though this dessert is called a mousse, in my opinion it is more of a pudding texture, the absence of eggs does also mean the absence of air within the dessert.

Step 5: Serve with toppings (optional).
This avocado chocolate mousse is delicious on its own, but you can elevate it with fresh toppings. Try adding sliced strawberries or raspberries for a pop of colour and tartness. Mint leaves work well too, adding a fresh contrast to the rich chocolate flavour. You can even sprinkle a bit of sea salt or cacao nibs for extra texture and flavour.

Variations:
- Coconut version: Replace the milk with coconut milk for a subtle tropical flavour.
- Nutty mousse: Add a spoonful of almond butter or peanut butter for a creamy, nutty taste.
- Vegan option: Use plant-based milk and agave syrup or a vegan-friendly sweetener to make the recipe entirely plant-based.
- Spiced mousse: Add a pinch of cinnamon or a dash of chilli powder for a Mexican-inspired chocolate mousse.
- Extra indulgent: Fold in some crushed nuts, such as hazelnuts or almonds, for added crunch.
