BBQ Tofu Skewers

I’ve always loved BBQ flavours, but finding a satisfying plant-based or lower calorie option that delivers the same smoky, caramelised taste can be tricky. After perfecting my UPF-free BBQ sauce, I knew I had to use it in a tofu recipe. The result? These BBQ tofu skewers are packed with flavour, have a gorgeous crispy glaze, and are incredibly easy to make. By using super firm tofu, you get a chewy, satisfying texture that soaks up the smoky-sweet sauce beautifully.

Why This BBQ Tofu Recipe is a Healthy Choice

Tofu is an excellent source of plant-based protein and a fantastic meat alternative, making it ideal for vegetarians, vegans, and anyone looking to reduce their meat intake. It’s low in calories but high in protein, calcium, and iron. Unlike store-bought BBQ tofu products, which often contain additives and preservatives, this homemade version keeps things simple and wholesome. The BBQ sauce is made without ultra-processed ingredients, refined sugar, or artificial thickeners, so you can enjoy it knowing exactly what’s gone into it.

How to Make BBQ Tofu Skewers

Making these BBQ tofu skewers is simple, requiring just a few steps and minimal prep time.

Step 1: Pressing tofu

Although super firm tofu doesn’t contain much excess water, pressing it helps ensure the best texture. If you have a tofu press you can use that but I wrapped a 200g piece of tofu in cheese cloth on a wire wrack and stacked several books on top, leaving it for an hour. This step isn’t strictly necessary, but it can help the tofu absorb more flavour.

Yes, I really do have a block of tofu under there!

Step 2: Prepare BBQ sauce

While the tofu is pressing, prepare the BBQ sauce by mixing together 500g passata, 2 tbsp honey or maple syrup, 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar, 1 tbsp Worcester sauce, ½ tsp garlic powder, 1 tsp paprika, ¼ tsp onion powder, ¼ tsp mixed spice or allspice, ¼ tsp mustard powder, and ⅛ tsp salt in a saucepan. Heat over a low-medium flame with the lid on for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened. For a full detailed recipe see the BBQ sauce recipe below.

Perfect for grilling, dipping, or marinating, this easy recipe takes just 20 minutes to make. Store in the fridge and enjoy within a week.

Step 3: Make the BBQ Tofu

Once the tofu pressed, cut the tofu into 12 even slabs. Thread three pieces onto each skewer, creating four skewers in total.

To prevent sticking, lightly oil a wire rack with avocado oil and place it over a baking tray. This allows air to circulate around the tofu, helping it cook evenly and develop a slightly crisp exterior.

Using a pastry brush, generously coat both sides of the tofu skewers with the homemade BBQ sauce. The sauce caramelises beautifully in the oven, so don’t be shy with it. If you don’t have a pastry brush you can use the back of a spoon too.

Step 4: Bake the BBQ Tofu

Preheat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan) and bake the skewers for 25-30 minutes, turning halfway through and brushing with a little more BBQ sauce if desired.

You can also grill these BBQ Tofu Skewers however they will take a much shorter time to cook and therefore the BBQ sauce will not glaze but this is totally down to preference.

How to Serve BBQ Tofu

These BBQ tofu skewers are incredibly versatile and can be served in various ways:

  • In a wrap – Slice the tofu and add it to a wholemeal wrap with salad and extra BBQ sauce.
  • With rice and vegetables – Serve alongside steamed rice, roasted sweet potatoes, or grilled corn for a balanced meal.
  • In a burger – Use the tofu slabs as a burger filling with crisp lettuce, tomato, and avocado.
  • As part of a BBQ platter – Pair with grilled vegetables, coleslaw, and potato salad for a perfect summer feast.
  • With a fresh salad – Serve over a crisp salad with a drizzle of extra BBQ sauce for a light, nutritious meal.

Variations & Substitutions

  • Add spice – Mix a little chilli powder or cayenne into the BBQ sauce for a spicier kick.
  • Use smoked tofu – If you love a deep smoky flavour, try using smoked tofu instead of plain super firm tofu.
  • Air fryer option – Cook the skewers in an air fryer at 190°C for 15-18 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  • Grill instead of baking – If you prefer, you can cook these on an outdoor BBQ or grill for a more authentic smoky taste.
  • Marinate for extra flavour – For even more depth of flavour, let the tofu sit in the BBQ sauce for 30 minutes before baking.
