What is caprese salad?
Caprese salad is a simple Italian salad formed of mozzarella, tomato and basil. The caprese salad is named after the Italian island of Capri which is where the salad is said to have originated. Caprese salad makes a great addition to a large array of dishes perfect for spring and summer parties and buffets although traditionally caprese salad would be served as a small starter rather than a side.

Step 1: Prepare the ingredients
Making a caprese salad is super quick and easy. Firstly, you’ll need some mozzarella balls, I used two but you can adapt this to suit your occasion. Using a sharp knife, thinly slice the mozzarella balls and place them on a piece of paper towel to dry off slightly. Mozzarella usually comes packed in water which can leave it rather soggy so to avoid having puddles of water on your plate I think leaving it on paper towel to dry out for 10-15 minutes is a great tip! You can then also do the same with your tomatoes. My recommendation would be to use nice chunky beef tomatoes however I was only able to get standard salad tomatoes at the time of photographing this recipe so that is what I have used.

Place alternating slices of mozzarella and tomato on your plate in a spiral, overlapping each slice slightly. Add several fresh leaves of basil on top and decorate by drizzling a balsamic glaze on top. Serve fresh.
