Healthy BBQ Sauce Recipe
What is BBQ sauce?
I’ve been trying to perfect a UPF-free BBQ sauce for nearly five years. No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t quite get it right without Worcester sauce—it always felt like something was missing. Then I discovered Biona’s Worcester sauce, which has much better ingredients than most other brands. While it’s not 100% UPF-free, it’s as close as I’ll ever come to a homemade BBQ sauce that stays true to my principles while delivering the rich, smoky depth that Worcester sauce brings. I often brag about having the best sugar free ketchup recipe but now that ketchup has close competition. Which condiment is your favourite?
What makes this BBQ sauce healthy?
Traditional BBQ sauces are often packed with ultra-processed ingredients like high-fructose corn syrup, artificial thickeners, and preservatives. This recipe skips all of that in favour of natural, whole ingredients while still keeping the classic balance of tangy, sweet, and smoky. Instead of refined sugar, I use honey for a more natural sweetness. The passata base keeps it light and fresh, while apple cider vinegar adds a tangy kick. The mix of paprika, mustard powder, and spices gives it that deep, smoky flavour without needing artificial smoke flavourings.

Step 1:
Combine the ingredients: Start by measuring out all the ingredients. Add 500g of passata, 2 tablespoons of honey, 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, 1 tablespoon of Worcester sauce, ½ teaspoon of garlic powder, 1 teaspoon of paprika, ¼ teaspoon of onion powder, ¼ teaspoon of mixed spice or allspice, ¼ teaspoon of mustard powder, and ⅛ teaspoon of salt into a saucepan.

Step 2:
Place the saucepan over a medium heat and stir well to combine everything. It’s important not to let it boil too aggressively, as the sugars in the honey can burn, giving the sauce a bitter taste. Instead, keep it at a gentle simmer. Cover the saucepan with a lid and let it simmer for around 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavours to meld together while reducing slightly for a thicker consistency. If you prefer a thinner sauce, you can cook it for a little less time, whereas for a thicker, richer sauce, let it go a few minutes longer.

Serve:
This sauce is incredibly versatile, making it a great staple to keep on hand. Here are some of my favourite ways to use it:
- As a marinade – Brush it over chicken, ribs, or tofu before grilling.
- As a dipping sauce – Perfect for sweet potato fries, grilled vegetables, or homemade chicken nuggets.
- In sandwiches and burgers – Spread it over a bun for an extra hit of smoky flavour.
- In slow-cooked dishes – Mix it into shredded chicken or pulled pork for a delicious BBQ twist.
BBQ sauce variations:
Make it spicier: Add ½ teaspoon of chilli powder or a dash of hot sauce for extra heat.
Use maple syrup instead of honey: If you’re vegan or prefer a different sweetness, maple syrup is a great alternative.
Try different vinegars: While apple cider vinegar works best, balsamic vinegar can add a deeper, slightly sweeter flavour.
Smokier flavour: Use smoked paprika instead of regular paprika for an extra smoky kick.
Lower sugar option: Reduce the honey to 1 tablespoon for a tangier, less sweet version.
FAQ
Can I freeze this BBQ sauce?
Yes! This sauce freezes really well. Let it cool completely before transferring it to a freezer-safe container. It will keep for up to 3 months in the freezer. Thaw in the fridge overnight and give it a good stir before using.
How long does homemade BBQ sauce last in the fridge?
Stored in an airtight jar, this sauce will keep for 5-7 days in the fridge. If you notice any changes in smell or texture, it’s best to discard it.
Is this BBQ sauce suitable for Slimming World?
Yes! This sauce is syn-free as it uses natural ingredients and no refined sugar. Just be mindful of portion sizes if following a calorie-controlled diet.
What can I use instead of Worcester sauce?
If you want a completely UPF-free option, you could try a mix of tamari, apple cider vinegar, and a tiny pinch of cloves. However, I found that Biona’s Worcester sauce was the key to getting the best flavour.
Can I use fresh garlic and onion instead of powders?
Yes! If you prefer, you can sauté 1 clove of minced garlic and ½ a finely chopped onion in a little avocado oil before adding the passata. This will give a fresher flavour but may change the texture slightly.
Can I make this in a slow cooker?
You can! Combine all the ingredients and cook on low for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally. This will give an even deeper, richer flavour.
Is this BBQ sauce keto-friendly?
It’s low-carb but not strictly keto due to the honey. You can substitute honey for a keto-friendly sweetener like erythritol or allulose if needed.
